THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy declared on Wednesday that the Neyyattinkara bypoll also would be an assessmentof the performance of the UDF Government by the people, just like the Piravom poll. Answering queries of mediapersons at a post-Cabinet briefing here, Chandy said that every election was an assessment of both the performance of the government and the Opposition by the people. Chandy also said that the fifth minister issue was a closed chapter and it had nothing to do with the reshuffle of portfolios in the Cabinet. On the fifth minister issue, the Chief Minister said that it was really unfortunate and even exaggerated. The IUML had five posts way back in 1991 itself and the claim was laid at the time of formation of the present government as well. “The only dispute in the UDF was the nature of the fifth post which had to be given. There was opposition in granting the post. After considering many factors, a fifth minister post was opted without the creation of any new portfolio,” the Chief Minister maintained. He said that all outstanding issues in the Congress would be solved through talks and the the party and the UDF would stand united.“In the campaign for the Piravom poll, the Congress and the UDF spoke in one voice. The people accepted it. It would be the same in Neyyattinkara also,” the Chief Minister said.
