Kolkata: Tapan Debbarma, a commandant of the 2nd Tripura State Rifles, has been arrested in connection with the murder of senior journalist Sudip Datta Bhaumik in Tripura.

Despite repeated attempts, Inspector General of Police (TSR), GS Rao, could not be contacted for his comment regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy was asked to submit a report to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Bhaumik’s murder allegedly by a TSR rifleman.

Speaking to the media persons, Roy said, “I will submit a report to the MHA. It is unfortunate that a journalist was killed by a TSR jawan inside the battalion headquarter complex. We will ensure justice to his family members.”

Bhaumik was a senior journalist of a popular newspaper in Tripura - Syandan Patrika. He was shot dead by a jawan of the 2nd Tripura State Rifles (TSR) Nandu Riyang.

The accused jawan was arrested on Tuesday and taken in to custody. The incident took place at RK Nagar area which is nearly 20 km away from Agartala.

On Wednesday, the News Editor of Syandan Patrika, Animesh Dutta, said, “In the morning the TSR Commandant Tapan Debbarma called up Sudip and asked him to meet him at his office. Sudip went to his office and after the meeting when he came out - the PSO of Commandant asked him whether he is having any knowledge about a document which was there on Commandant’s table. Sudip told the PSO that he is not aware of any such documents. At that time the Commandant was in toilet. Both Sudip and the PSO had a heated argument and suddenly the PSO fired at him with his service rifle.”
