New Delhi: Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Friday clarified that the triple talaq issue should not be linked with the uniform civil code and the real challenge was to counter gender discrimination and dignity of women.
"Triple talaq is being linked to uniform civil code but the main issues are gender justice, non-discrimination and dignity of women," said the Minister.
While speaking at a press conference, the Minister urged the Muslim Personal Law Board not to politicise the issue.
"Why drag the Prime Minister's name in this issue? Muslim Personal Law Board should not politicise the issue. Join the party of your choice if you want to make political comments," said the Minister.
Naidu assured the people that nothing will be imposed upon them.
Earlier, submitting its views on the subject in the Supreme Court, the Narendra Modi Government unequivocally opposed the concept of ‘Triple Talaq’ as something which violates the fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution and said it did not form a part of the “essential religious practices” in Islam.
Muslim women campaigners are ecstatic at the response of the Central Government and are hopeful of a positive reformation regarding unilateral divorces, child marriage and polygamy.
AIMPLB earlier, taking shelter under the ‘Right to Religion’ guaranteed under the constitution , had submitted that such matters are not within the purview of the judiciary and even stated that during marital discord, it’s better for a man to divorce his wife, rather than resorting to ‘criminal ways to get rid of her.’Also Read: Will Take People's Vote on Uniform Civil Code: Law Commission Chairman
