UDHAGAMANDALAM: A policeman met died while performing a daring feat during the Republic Day celebrations held at the HADP (Hill Area Development Programme) Open Air Stadium here on Thursday. As part of the last performance of the day, M Pandiyan (31), attached to the Armed Reserve Police, Nilgiris, was jumping over different levels of a human tower formation, when the incident occurred.Tragedy struck as he was trying to cross the final level and fell down on the ground, sustaining serious injuries to his neck in the process.Though he was taken to the Government Headquarters Hospital here, he succumbed to his injuries.As word spread, families of police officials from the police quarters here gathered at the hospital and consoled his wife Sandhya.Doctors who attended to Pandiyan at the hospital said that though they tried to provide the best possible treatment, he died as his artery system was badly affected. “Due to this, blood supply from the heart stopped, resulting in his death,” doctors said.A native of K K Kulam in Theni district, Pandiyan is survived by his wife, six-year-old son Ajith and 11-month-old girl Srivarshini. Trained in Karate, Pandiyan joined the Armed Reserve Police in 2003.
