NAGAPATTINAM: In keeping with Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s poll promise, fisheries minister KA Jayapaul on Monday announced that three new fishing harbours would be established in the district and that an existing harbour at Pazhayar would be modernised.Accompanied by Mayiladuthurai MP OS Manian, fisheries secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, fisheries commissioner Sellamuthu, collector C Munianathan and MLAs, Jayapaul visited the Pazhayar fishing harbour on Monday.The Minister told journalists here that that during the election campaign, the Chief Minister promised that a fishing harbour would be established at Poompuhar. “We have identified land for setting up the harbour at Poompuhar. A project estimate has been prepared to establish it at a cost of `60 crore,” said Jayapaul.New fishing harbours would also be set up at Nagore and Nagapattinam, while the existing one at Pazhayar would be modernised, he added. “Funds were allotted for the Pazhayar fishing harbour modernisation more than two years ago, but work did not commence.” “It will now be carried out at a total cost of `27.56 crore,” informed the Minister.Further, he announced that at Nagore, in addition to the proposed harbour, a fish landing centre would also be constructed at a cost of `10.6 crore.During a function held at the collectorate later, the Minister launched the distribution of enhanced compensation of `2000 per family for the annual 45-day ban on fishing activity. According to Jayapaul, as many as 22,965 fishing families in the district would be benefited by this scheme.DRO V Rajendran, Poompuhar MLA S Paunraj, Sirkazhi MLA M Sakthi, Mayiladuthurai MLA Bala Arulselvan, Joint Director of Fisheries Subburaj and other officials were also present on the occasion.
