Thousands of migratory Australian flamingos have flocked to Ousteri Lake, also referred to as Osudu Lake. This lake extends to about 800 hectares, in which 390 hectares lies in Puducherry and the rest in Tamil Nadu. According to the Local 18 Tamil, Australian flamingos are considered to be the rare species of birds. They have gathered at the Ousteri Lake for breeding purposes. Watching these migratory birds at the lake is a sight to behold as they descend into shallow water and then assemble in a line. They also keep submerging their heads in between, probably searching for prey. To watch these birds and their activities, a massive number of tourists gather at the Ousteri Lake. Ornithologists ( people who study birds) have started a survey of the flamingos that add to the allure of the Ousteri Lake.

As per the Ornithologist Kudapakkam Ramesh, flamingo birds are found in Gujarat, India. They migrate to Pazhaverkadu, Kodikkarai Beach, Koonthankulam and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. Generally flamingos do not visit Puducherry. They visited Tamil Nadu in 2014. Now, they have returned in large numbers at Ousteri Lake. This lake has become an ideal habitat for these birds who prefer a peaceful and secure environment.

The Australian flamingos have long pink legs and an equally large neck. The colour of their body is white and they have an unique set of characteristics. They search for prey by turning their heads upside down in water and keeping their entire body away from it. Unlike other birds, their upper body shows a higher number of mobility. They manage to catch their prey (small aquatic organisms) with the help of their large tongues. These birds mostly consume small shrimps, insects and other aquatic plants. Australian flamingos are often not seen alone and they come up with a gathering (flamboyance). According to the Ornithologist Kudapakkam, if measures are taken to protect these flamingos and the Ousteri Lake, the birds will stay here permanently.

In a similar instance in 2020, thousands of migratory Australian flamingos have flocked to Rameswaram’s Dhanuskodi town in Tamil Nadu.
