Exploring the memories of a couple and their realisations as to how certain insignificant incidents play an important role in defining a person’s personality, is the Bengaluru-based theatre group Indian Ensemble, through their Hindi play titled Treadmill, which will be staged today and tomorrow in the city.
With an intention to inspire Hyderabadi theatre enthusiasts, R K Shenoy, founder and director of Dramanon Hyderabad invited Indian Ensemble to present their well-appreciated play, Treadmill. “We have seen an exponential growth of theatre activities in Hyderabad in the last two years or so. There are more number of theatre groups, theatre festivals and competitions being organised. Although there is an exposure to quality theatre, I still feel that it is not enough. There have to be more of such activities where acclaimed groups and plays need to be showcased such that it inspires theatre enthusiasts. That is why I invited this group to showcase their art in Hyderabad,” says Shenoy.
Written by Sandeep Shikhar, Treadmill was initially a monologue, but director Abhishek Majumdar added few more actors to this act. “When I read the script, it was flexible enough to be performed with as many actors as we wanted,” shares Majumdar, adding, “That is the quality of a good play. For example, a Shakerspearan play can be performed using one actor or 70 actors.
But, the essence of it is the story and the characters of the story. That is how our play is.”
Treadmill is a comedy act, which is contemporary in nature and very relatable to the audience. The play will be seen with three actors, donning the hat of multiple characters.
“This play can be done in many ways and we have already performed it around 27 times with a change in the actors and some additions/deletions in the script. However, the essence of the script has always remained the same. The experience has been a very personal and a wonderful one. I hope Hyderabad enjoys the play,” signs off Majumdar.
‘Treadmill’ will be staged today at 8 pm and tomorrow at 6 pm at the NIFT auditorium, Madhapur.
