THRISSUR: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has targeted Chief Minister Oommen Chandy alleging that he had violated the swearing-in pledge by reinstating Tomin J Thachankary to service as Marketfed MD. He was speaking to mediapersons at Ramanilayam, near here, on Sunday. “Showing favouritism, the Chief Minister had reinstated Thachankary, who has been implicated in several cases, to service. It was a clear breach of the oath he had taken while swearing in as the head of the state that he would not show bias towards anyone,” the Opposition Leader said. “Chandy has to step down taking this into consideration,” he added. VS said Thachankary should be terminated from service. “Though cleared by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as having no terrorist links, an officer who has been accused of many crimes should not be reinstated until he is acquitted by the court in all the cases,” he said. VS said the Chandy Government was distorting the NIA report on Thachankary and the stance of the Union Government. “The Union Home Ministry had directed the state government to initiate disciplinary action against Thachankary for associating with people with dubious credentials and accepting their hospitality in abroad. He has violated the service rules, during his controversial foreign trips in 2010.” V S said. Thachankary has been under suspension since April 2008 on charges of going on a foreign trip without mandatory permission while serving as IG (law and order) in Kannur. Besides, he had faced an National Investigation Agency probe on his alleged meeting with terrorists who were accused escaping the police net in Kerala and hiding in the Gulf.
