Terrorist activity suspected in Kashmirkunnu

Mystery shrouds the killing of dogs by hacking them in Kashmirkunnu area near Karanthoor. The natives allege that secluded areas of the hill, which are far-famed for scenic beauty, are now fields of arms training for some extremist groups.

City Police have intensified patrolling in the area after the complaints of the natives alleging that terror groups are conducting arms training here.

During the last week, hundreds of dogs in the area were attacked with lethal weapons. A few cattle were also attacked. Similar incidents occurred in the nearby Malappuram district and a probe by the Intelligence authorities into it is moving on. Local people have alleged that lots of strange people were arriving there in vehicles during the night.

“In the last week, many dogs were attacked in the area and this aroused panic among the people. The presence of strangers in the area during night added up to the fear of terrorists,” said a native of Kashmirkunnu, who refused to be named.

Kashmirkunnu got its name from its natural beauty like Kashmir. The land is owned by an NRI businessman hailing from Malaparamba in the city.  According to sources, some extremist forces based in North Malabar are conducting parades and physical training in the area as the place is secluded.  As many people visit the area to enjoy the scenic beauty, at the initial stages, nobody felt anything unusual. However, the attacks on dogs has aroused the suspicion of extremist activity.

Earlier, local people had complained about the

incidents before police officials.  “We took the incident seriously as similar types of incidents were reported in Malappuram. Patrolling has been intensified.  So far, no unusual incidents have noticed,” said City Police Commissioner G Sparjan Kumar.
