New Delhi: Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan has alleged tax officials harassed her family when they asked for information on expenses incurred on the wedding of her son Abhishek with fellow actress Aishwarya Rai.
"I received notices from (service) tax authorities who wanted to know how much was spent on beauty parlour and flowers at my son’s wedding," Bachchan told the House on Saturday.
PTI reports Bachchan, who was speaking during a debate on a bill seeking Parliamentary approval for supplementary demands for grants, alleged that service tax rules were being misused to seek information on weddings. She alleged she humiliated and empathised with people had been harassed by tax officials.
JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav and SP MP Brij Bhushan Tiwari supported Bachchan and alleged the Government had a "pick-and-choose" policy on tax collection.
Yadav alleged beauticians and hairdressers were asked to give information on their income but big industrial houses were spared.
"Questions like how much you spent on your gardener and hair stylist as pointed out by my party member is a case of harassment in the name of service tax which has not been clearly defined by government," Tiwari said.
