MADURAI:  Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M K Alagiri surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Melur on Tuesday in the tahsildar attack case. He was granted bail later. On April 1, Alagiri and his supporters visited the Valladikarar Temple in Ambalakaranpatti while campaigning for the Assembly election. While Melur tahsildar S Kalimuthu, in his capacity as the returning officer in the constituency, along with election videographer Kannan, was recording the visit, some DMK cadre reportedly assaulted him. The partymen also attempted to snatch the video camera. Later, Kalimuthu filed a complaint at the Keelavalavu police station. A case was then filed against Alagiri and three of his supporters. All of them obtained an anticipatory bail from Madurai Bench. When Kannan of the AIADMK filed a petition seeking to be impleaded in the case as an eyewitness and sought that their anticipatory bail be cancelled, the accused asked the case to be struck down.Just as much hot air was being blown, Kalimuthu did a turnabout. He retracted his complaint saying that he had filed the case on compulsion. Instead, he added, what led to an argument was that he was wearing chappals inside the temple. When the court ordered a stay on inquiry into the case,  Melur police Inspector Madasamy filed a petition seeking to vacate it. The case was heard by Justice P Rajendran in the Madurai Bench on Tuesday.Appearing at the hearing, Kalimuthu said he wanted to withdraw his previous petition. The judge, therefore, cancelled his petition and vacated the stay. Under such a circumstance, Alagiri and Mannan surrendered before the Melur Judicial Magistrate at 10.30 am and were seated inside the court. They were summoned for the hearing at 11 am.During the hearing, Perumal and Muruganandam appeared before magistrate H Jaseema Yasmin and agreed to be guarantors for the minister. Accepting the guarantee, the judge granted bail to the Union Minister.
