T20 to dandiya, cheer girls keep the spirits high
In a Navratri season shadowed by terror threats, here's some cheer.

Surat: You have seen them at Twenty20 cricket matches, but now you can see them in a totally different setting.

This Navratri, some enterprising organisers in Gujarat have brought in cheerleaders from Mumbai to keep the participiants’ energy level high throughout the dandiya night.

“Cheerleading during Navratri is more challenging and definitely more satisfactory. In cricket, it’s just used to keep people occupied between different overs,” a dandiya cheerleader, Lata, says.

And by the looks of it, there is no doubt that the cheerleaders’ contribution is well appreciated.

“Their energy keeps us charged up. Watching their energy, we feel like dancing longer,” a dandiya enthusiast, Sandhya, says.

The cheerleaders are mostly stage artists from Mumbai. Organisers pay anything between Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for a group of ten. They say it’s worth the money.

“Cheerleaders proved to be huge crowd-pullers during the IPL matches. We thought we should offer something new to dandiya enthusiasts too,” organiser, Rangila Group, Manoj Shinde, says.

In a Navaratri season shadowed by terror threats, the cheerleaders have definitely brought in a lot of cheer.BLUR_B
