Suspected Naxals set on fire three vehicles in a bid to disrupt road construction work in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Sunday.
The vehicles, including a road-roller, a tanker and a JCB machine, were parked at the site where road construction work was going on when they were set afire near Paralkot villages no. 84 and 85 on Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border late last night, Superintendent of Police R N Dash said over phone.
Around 12 ultras from Maharashtra torched the vehicles, he said.
A police team was sent to the site when labourers informed them about the incident, he said, adding that a search operation was on to apprehend the ultras.
Villagers from the region recently held a meeting and requested the contractor to construct the road ahead of monsoon. Without informing police, the contractor started work with the support of villagers, he said.
When the rebels from adjoining Maharashtra came to know about the move, they planned to thwart the development work, the SP said.
"Villagers are unhappy with the incident and said they will continue efforts for development works in the region," Dash said.
