Sushmita sued for 'chaste' remarks
A Madurai-based advocate has filed a criminal complaint against Sushmita for her reported remarks on chastity.

New Delhi: First it was Tamil actress Kushboo and now it’s the turn of former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen to get a taste of a “chaste” controversy down south.

According to news agency PTI, a Madurai-based advocate has filed a criminal complaint against Sushmita for her reported remarks on chastity.

S Greesh Kumar has moved the court seeking action against the actress for her remarks during an interview telecast across all major TV channels on November 6 last year, where she reportedly said that "chastity has no meaning in the current period and it applies to both men and women".

The same interview was published in a Tamil daily the next day. Kumar alleges the actress’s remark was “sweeping in nature, and directed towards all Indians.”

Alleging that actress had given the interview knowing fully well that her opinions and statements would be published, Kumar was quoted as saying, “Coming as it does from a person of universal appeal and a celebrity, it would have an impact on the young society. Hence such remarks are illegal, unfortunate, and liable to be dealt with as per law.”

The complainant has sought action under the Indian Penal Code and Indecent Representation of Women Act and Magistrate R Chandrasekharan has posted the case for further hearing on February 23.

In 2005, Tamil actress remarks on pre-marital sex and virginity snowballed into a huge moral debate and also acquired political colours.
