New Delhi: Sudan on Monday supported India's claim for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council.

The 22-member delegation of the Women Parliamentarians Caucus of the National Assembly of Sudan, led by President of the Women's Caucus Samia Hassan Sied Ahmed, conveyed this while calling on Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Welcoming the delegation, Kumar expressed satisfaction over the growing profile of bilateral relationship between India and Sudan and said the two nations shared a deep bond of friendship from times immemorial.

The Lok Sabha Speaker thanked Sudan for supporting India's case for permanent membership of the UN Security Council. Kumar said the preservation of democratic traditions and ethos in the two countries is indeed laudable and praised Sudan for strengthening democracy in the country despite several odds and continuous spells of hardships, including political instability that it had to face recently.

She also lauded the Sudanese initiative to reserve 25 per cent seats for women in their legislative bodies and informed the visiting delegation that 33 per cent of total seats in local bodies in India have been reserved for women.

Kumar said women are an integral part of society and have an equal claim to everything that is at the disposal of mankind and every effort should be made towards achieving the goal of gender equality and beyond.

Sharing the sentiment, Samia Hassan Sied Ahmed thanked Kumar for providing them an opportunity to learn more about democratic practices and parliamentary procedures in India.

The Sudanese delegation is on a 3-day study visit at the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST) of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The delegation had meetings with Chairman of the Standing Committee on Rural Development Sumitra Mahajan and the honorary advisor of BPST Renuka Chowdhury. The Delegation will have more interactive sessions at the BPST.
