He will lead England in the first Test against Pakistan that starts at Lord's on July 13.

London: Andrew Strauss will captain England for the first Test against Pakistan, selectors said on Tuesday, and he will remain skipper until allrounder Andrew Flintoff is fit.

South African-born Strauss captained England in its 5-0 defeat by Sri Lanka in the One-Day series which ended on Saturday.

''We are fortunate to have a very capable deputy available in Andrew Strauss and he will continue to lead the Test side in Andrew Flintoff's absence,'' England chairman of selectors David Graveney said.

Former captain Flintoff is recovering from an ankle injury, while England's regular captain, Michael Vaughan, had an operation on Monday for a long-term knee injury.

Vaughan will miss much - if not all - of the Ashes tour of Australia starting in November.

The first Test between England and Pakistan starts at Lord's on July 13.
