BANGALORE: The state government has promised to end the severe drinking water scarcity faced by the people of Belgaum, Bhagalkot, Dharwad and Gadag districts by bringing Mahadayi river water after settling the dispute between the state and Goa in the Tribunal constituted under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956. In reply to a query raised in the Legislative Council by Congress member Mahanthesh Shivanand Koujalagi during Question Hour, Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said works on the drinking water project were in progress.Stating that the government was committed to utilising about 45 tmc of water to meet the drinking water needs of the four northern Karnataka, the minister said the government had engaged eminent lawyers, headed by F S Nariman, to represent the state before the tribunal. He also said the works on executing the 5.15 km length of the canal connecting Malaprabha river and Kalasa Nala, a tributary of the Malaprabha, were going on fast track, and they were likely to be completed before December next, if not May.Works on the canal running through non-forest area for about 3.70 km had been  completed, and works on another 1.45-km stretch were hindered due to heavy rains, he said, adding that a master plan was formulated to implement the project.
