BANGALORE: Miffed by the party’s decision to keep them out of Chief Minister D V Sadanand Gowda’s Cabinet owing to charges of illegal mining against them, former minister and close associate of the Bellary Reddy brothers, B Sriramulu handed over his resignation from the state Assembly to Speaker K G Bopaiah on Sunday night at Madikeri. The Speaker said he would take a decision after going through the procedures.Though Sriramulu cited the pain he experienced following his indictment as the reason for his decision, his opponents and political circles view it as pressure tactics to get their share in the government. After holding days of consultations with his supporters and party workers, Sriramulu had announced his decision to resign at a press conference here, while claiming that his decision was not aimed at destabilising the state BJP government and all his MLA friends, including the Reddys, will remain in the party. “I am shocked and pained by my indictment. Questions are being raised about my credibility. My self-respect is more important than anything else,” Sriramulu told reporters before heading to Madikeri to submit his resignation to the Speaker.Meanwhile, the CM huddled with a few of his senior ministers after Sriramulu’s announcement and decided to leave the matter to the party high command, though Gowda said that he would try and persuade Sriramulu to take back his resignation. On his part, state BJP state president K S Eshwarappa also appealed to Sriramulu to reconsider his decision as the party was looking into a legal angle about their induction into the ministry.
