All sections of people should be made aware of the benefits of the space programme, Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, executive vice-president, and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), said here on Thursday.
He was speaking after inaugurating the World Space Week-2012 celebrations organised by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
Space has contributed in providing telemedicine, tele-education and satellite navigation, search and rescue, disaster management and monitoring urban sprawl. The theme of this year’s celebration ‘Space for safety and security’ is very much relevant in today’s world, he said.
He also lauded ISRO’s contributions in the development of communication, TV and telephone connectivity, increasing the agricultural production and natural resources management.
VSSC has organised celebrations at Kozhikode, Kakkanad, Kannur, Kodumon and Chennithala also.
VSSC associate director John P Zacharia presided over the function. GSLV-MK III project director S Somnath welcomed the gathering. IISU director G Ravindranath was also present at the function at VSSC. VSSC is organising quiz, essay competitions, rocket launchings and interactions between school children and space scientists as part of the week-long programme.
Seventy scientists from VSSC will interact with students at 250 schools in Kerala during the week. Prizes for winners of the competitions will be presented at the valedictory function on October 10.
