Soon, a law to plug housing scheme irregularities

A new law that would help plug irregularities and bring more transparency in housing schemes would be introduced in the next state Assembly session, Housing Minister V Somanna said.

The minister told reporters in Zalaki on Wednesday that gram panchayat presidents and staff of panchayat development offices and taluk panchayat executives would be directly held responsible for any misuse of housing schemes provided to the poor.

Three months jail and fine up to `50,000 is envisaged in the law, Somanna said.

Framing of rules and regulations were in the final stages, he added.

Somanna informed that special duty officials would be appointed in each district and they would be held responsible for implementing all housing schemes for poor including Ashraya.

Global Positioning System (GPS) technology would be used to bring in more transparency in allocation of homes to the poor in the villages.

Fake or benami allocations would be made punishable under the law.

The minister agreed that getting land for housing was posing a problem in the state.

The cost of the construction had also increased from `75,000 to `1 lakh, Somanna added.
