KOCHI: “We have to explore the vast potential of water against the backdrop of dwindling cultivable land,” said Ramachandran Thekkedath, Vice-Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) after inaugurating the curtain raiser ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), SOFTI, at Centre for Fisheries Technology (CIFT) on Wednesday. He released the Golden Jubilee logo and officially launched the SOFTI website.He said, “Institutes like CIFT should concentrate on technology development while keeping in mind the commercialisation aspects. A strong intellectual property regime is important for a knowledge-based society.”The year-long celebrations will include seminars, debates, exhibitions and conferences on various aspects of harvest and post-fisheries and will be held in different parts of the country.SOFTI is a forum of researchers, technologists, academicians and administrators  promoting the cause of fisheries and fisheries technology and preserving species diversity and ecology. The events in connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations are solely dedicated to greening the fisheries sector, and would take place at the local, national, regional and global levels during 2012.T K Srinivasa Gopal, president, SOFTI, and director, CIFT, presided over the function and released the Golden Jubilee brochure. P T Lakshmanan, vice-president, SOFTI, welcomed the gathering and T V Sankar, secretary, highlighted the achievements of CIFT during the last 50 years.
