BANGALORE: Soon, the city may escape the sight of animal slaughter, as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), will not allow  butcher units inside the city limits. While BBMP’s long pending plan to set up modernised slaughter house on city outskirts is yet to materialise, the BBMP has come up with an additional proposal to set up four mini slaughter houses for small animals. In September 2011, the Standing Committee for Health, along with BBMP officials had visited the ‘hi-tech’ slaughter house in New Delhi. Talking about the state-of-the-art slaughter house, officials noted that  the modern slaughtering facilities were in hygienic conditions. The waste generated  from animals would be treated to protect the environment from hazardous waste.  According to BBMP deputy commissioner (Health) Y M Ramachandramurthy, the authority has purchased  40 acres of land from Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) at Harohalli, near Kanakapura. Palike has paid `24 crore to buy the land. The slaughter house can cut around 1,500 big animals and 2,500 small animals. Chennai-based Abattoirs Private Limited has been finalised to set up a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. When asked why these slaughter houses were not started yet, Ramachandramurthy said that they have to pay an interest of `80 lakh to KIADB. Moreover, localities were protesting against the move. “They have assaulted our engineers when they were on the site,” he said.
