CHENNAI: The Indian Science Monitor honoured six persons with the Ninth Sir JC Bose Award on Sunday for their achievements in the field of science and its propagation to the common man. Speakers at the awards ceremony — both dignitaries and the awardees — stressed on the need to take technology to people at the grassroots level to ensure advancement in agriculture and health.P Murugesa Bhoopathi, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, gave away the awards to M Vairamani, Dean of the School of Bioengineering at the SRM University, MJ Prabhu, agricultural correspondent at a media house, A Abdul Rahman of the Sairam Salt Research Institute, T Senthilkumar, Assistant Professor at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, and S Senthilkumaran, Director of Information, Education and Communication at the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation. Dr S Gurushankar, Vice Chairman of the Meenakshi Medical Mission Hospital & Research Institute, was the other awardee.After being bestowed with the honour, the awardees stressed on the need for speedier technological growth and its subsequent transfer into effective and practical use at the grassroots level. The achievements honoured ranged from ‘research into chemical weaponry and essential salts production and delivery to writing on agricultural issues’, ‘dissemination of information in agriculture-allied alternate livelihood to rural women’ and strengthing knowledge transfer to farmers and medical service.
