HYDERABAD: Hyderabad selectors have pulled a rabbit out of the hat by recalling controversial N Arjun Yadav into the Twenty20 squad that will take part in the South Zone inter-state Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to be held from October 16 to 21 in Chennai. The four-member selection committee, headed by Abdul Azeem, met here on Thursday and picked the 15-member team including 29-year-old Arjun, who was dropped from the Ranji team after Hyderabad were bundled out for the lowest-ever Ranji score of 21 against Rajasthan last season. Azeem had then justified the axing of Arjun, son of former Test off-spinner and BCCI vice-president N Shivlal Yadav, and other players. On Thursday, though, there was no response from Azeem on Arjun’s selection. What has raised eyebrows is the fact that Arjun, who has a poor average of 28.25 from 73 first-class matches since his debut in 1999, was not amongst runs this season for Andhra Bank in the local leagues also. “It is all a compromise formula at the highest levels of the HCA. How can Arjun be selected when he has no scores in league matches? This move sends wrong signals to young cricketers,” said a former player.Arjun’s statistics for Hyderabad have been poor, to say the least. He had scores of 5 and 12 against Rajasthan in the last Ranji match he played.
