SHIMOGA: After getting confirmation that the 24 foetuses found in dustbins on OT Road and a gutter in Harakere in the city belonged to Vivekananda Hospital, the district administration filed a criminal case against its owner and Indian Medical Association district president Dr Mahendrappa for violating norms. The hospital’s licence would be cancelled, said Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj. After holding a meeting with the SP, Health Department officials, McGann Medical College Hospital doctors and other officials at his office here on Saturday, the DC told reporters that it was clear that the hospital had violated Medical Treatment Procedure Act, PCP&DT Act, Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act and Pollution Control Board Act.After autopsy, it was found that out of 24 foetuses, 5 were male and 15 female. Prima facie, the hospital authorities could have been conducting sex determination tests for a long time. Even when the foetus is terminated on medical grounds, the hospital has to follow procedure according to the Act and intimate the district administration and DHO. But nothing was done since two years. The DC had directed the Jayanagar Police to file cases against Mahendrappa and four other doctors.
