Mumbai: The Maharashtra Assembly was adjourned for the day on Monday after Shiv Sena opposition created a furore over Sunday’s desecration of the statue of Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s wife Meenatai.
“We'll raise this issue in Vidhan Sabha. CM and Deputy CM had appealed for calm on Sunday. We maintained peace. Now, they should do something about it,” Sena President Uddhav Thackeray said.
Sena supporters torched a bus at Shivaji Park and violence soon spread to other parts of the city and the state.
“All Hindus here have been hurt. Unless they are caught, we will not be quiet. We will disrupt the Assembly today,” Opposition Leader Maharashtra Assembly Ramdas Kadam said.
Former Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane accused the Shiv Sena of conspiring to divert attention from the “real issues”.
“It was a conspiracy by Shiv Sena. They did this in connivance with the police and government,” Rane said.
Amid the hullabloo, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil assued action against those responsible.
"The culprits will be caught but once they are caught those who are making an issue out of this will repent,” he said.
