THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The students and faculty of Rajadhani Institute of Engineering & Technology (RIET) celebrated the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day by organising a seminar on ‘Women & Girls in ICT - Opportunities & Challenges.’  IT Principal Secretary P H Kurien inaugurated the seminar. In his address, he said that though the theme had been in focus among many organisations for more than a decade action was very limited. He appreciated the efforts of educational institutions in bringing women familiarise with ICT use and applications.   He called for collaboration between the government and engineering institutes to bridge the digital divide. Efforts should also be made to conduct indepth research so that policies could be developed to empower women.  Kurien also released the information booklet for 2012 by handing the first copy to chairman Biju Ramesh. Elizabeth Shirley, director of IIITM K, Technopark, stressed the need for removing the fear of technology. She urged women to accept technology with an open mind for achieving development.  Binu Jacob, MD, Experion Technologies, Satish Babu, director of International Centre for Free and open source software, Narayanan, director, RIET, Sharma, principal, RIET, and Reshma B Ramesh, spoke.
