MADURAI: The local body election should set an example for the future, said State Election Commissioner S Ayyar .Talking to media persons after a review meeting, attended by collectors of nine southern districts and top police officials, on poll arrangements here, on Friday, he said that the election commission has initiated various steps, such as introduction of electronic voting machines for the first time in civic polls, photo electoral rolls and distribution of booth slips with photos carrying the signature of electoral officer to every house by government officials to ensure fair polling. As an additional arrangement, booth slips would be issued at the polling booths to those voters who could not be present when officials came to their house for distribution of the slips. Special arrangements would be made for senior citizens and disabled people to exercise their franchise without any hassle, he said. Adding that a senior IAS officers would be posted as election observers in every district to monitor the proceedings, the SEC said that micro-observers would be deputed to polling stations to watch the proceedings on the poll day in critical points. Besides all these, the election proceedings in all poll booths would be video-graphed. To a query on power supply on the poll day, he said, a request has been made to the electricity board officials to provide uninterrupted power supply. Regarding time extension, Iyer told that the polling process would begin at 7 am and end at 5 pm. On a final note, he said in the present elections there was surge in the number of nominations which indicated the increasing confidence in the EC.
