BANGALORE: Noting that scientists were not getting due recognition when compared to film actors and cricketers, Prof U R Rao, Secretary, Department of Space, said “Science alone can ensure prosperity of a nation. More scientific temperament and knowledge are required to improve technical aspects. Science is meant for young and youths should take it up.”He was speaking at an award presentation ceremony, organised by the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy, Department of Science and Environment, to honour writers in Science, Technology and Agriculture. “How can the government give money for science related researches? They only have money for temples. Scientists in India are not funded properly. Because of this, India has been able to produce only 1/4th PhD scholar when compared with China,” he observed. He lashed out at the way tax-payer’s money was being wasted on research. “If the GDP has to increase by one per cent, the energy production should increase by 0.7 per cent. We all talk so much about generating power from solar energy. But researches are being conducted expecting to hold the number one position, but end up achieving nothing.” Writers Dr P Narayan Swamy and Somashekar B S (agriculture), Dr J Balakrishna and Dr H R Krishna Murthy (science), and T G Srinidhi and G I Bhat (technology) were given awards.
