TIRUCHY: A managing trustee of a private school was arrested and remanded to judicial custody after assaulting a media cameraman who tried to shoot a quarrel between parents and school authorities over hike in school fees.Kamala Niketan School in Tiruchy increased the fees to about Rs 35000 per annum and a caution deposit of Rs10000, which resulted in protests by the parents. The parents were staging a series of protests since April and had submitted a petition with the District Collector, who had forwarded the petition to the RDO, instructing him to convene a meeting to sort out the issue.Following the Collector’s intervention, the school management announced that it would collect only the fees recommended by the Justice Govindarajan Committee until the revised fee structure is finalised by the newly appointed Justice Ravi Raja Pandian Panel.Meanwhile, the RDO instructed the school to collect the prescribed fee between May 20 and June first week. However, on Friday, when the parents went to the school to pay the fee, they were again compelled to pay the caution deposit of ` 10,000 after which a quarrel erupted between the parents and school authorities in the presence of media persons.On noticing a cameraman belonging to a Tamil channel shooting the quarrel, Sathyamurthy, the managing trustee of the school rushed out from the office and started assaulting the cameraman B Riyaz Ahamed. He snatched away his video camera and smashed it over his head and started hitting him on the face, causing injuries. He was admitted to the GH for treatment. As the news spread, mediapersons lodged a complaint with the Cantonment police, who later arrested Sathyamurthy and he was remanded to judicial custody. In the meantime, the parents also lodged a complaint with the school administration.
