A senior Revenue Department official in the rank of Deputy Collector, who is presently posted as Adi Dravidar Welfare (ADW) Officer in Namakkal, is likely to face action for his alleged involvement in the students’ scholarship scandal which has rocked the district.
A preliminary probe has also helped determine the alleged collusion by the Superintendent of the ADW Department in the embezzlement of funds meant for children of tanners and scavengers. “An inquiry by the Inspection Cell Officer (Salem) Jagajothi has pointed to the alleged role of the ADW Officer and the Superintendent of the ADW Department here,” Collector J Kumaragurubharan told Express on Monday. “We have decided to send a recommendation to the Revenue Department Secretary along with the findings of the ICO for appropriate action against the two officials,” he added.
It is learnt that the Collector is unable to directly proceed against the ADW Officer as he holds the rank of a Deputy Collector under the Revenue Department.
Last week, headmasters of 75 schools were placed under suspension on the orders of the Collector for their role in embezzling ADW Department’s scholarship funds to the tune of several lakh rupees. The funds were meant for beneficiaries in 77 elementary and middle schools in the district.
So far one teacher has been arrested while a hunt is on for three headmasters.
