PUDUCHERRY: Having lost their documents when the ship Costa Concordia sank off the island of Giglio in Italy on Friday, the rescued Indians—all of them crew members except one—would be able to head back home to India only with the assistance of the Indian Embassy. But, till Saturday night there had been no embassy official in sight, Ramkumar, one of the catering staff onboard the ship, told his family in Puducherry. He called up his father Devendran, who then contacted Union Minister of State in charge of the PMO V Narayanasamy, who was here on Sunday. He said he spoke to National security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, who in turn was in touch with Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and that the latter had informed the Embassy in Rome, following which the Embassy stepped in. “They have reached the island and are coordinating (the return of the crew),” he said. Ramkumar, however, told his father that it could take time for him to return, as the crew were yet to be paid their salaries. He said he was standing united with the others, who had decided not to leave till the management settled their grievances.
