CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government has disbursed aid to the tune of Rs 55 crore to 1.93 lakh cyclone-hit families in Cuddalore district, Minister for Rural Industries M C Sampath said on Sunday.He said assistance of Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,500 each for families whose houses were fully and partially damaged respectively were being disbursed. Also, all the affected families were being given 10 kg rice, 1 litre kerosene, dhoti and saree. As on January 7, 1.93 lakh families were provided relief worth Rs 55 crore in the form of cash assistance and essential commodities besides clothing, he added. According to the survey by officials, 72,523 hectare of paddy crop, 8,309 hectare of sugarcane, 1,253 hectare of coconut trees, over 200 hectare of cotton, 28,000 hectare of cashew trees have been affected. Estimates on damaged jackfruit trees, boats and fishing nets was going on, the minister noted. Municipal administration and rural development minister KP Munusamy said work to restore distribution of electricity was being undertaken on a war- footing. Drinking water is being provided across the district, he added. Meanwhile, a nine-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team led by Joint Secretary of Home Ministry Lokesh Jha would visit Cuddalore on Monday to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Thane. The team is expected to visit Villupuram and Thanajvur before returning to Chennai.
