CHENNAI: Highways Minister K Palanisamy on Monday announced that bridges, foot overbridges and flyovers would be built at important places in the city and its suburban areas on a priority basis at a cost of over `319 crore with a view to upgrading the transport infrastructure.Replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for his department in the State Assembly, the Minister said new subways would be built near St Thomas Mount Church, Inner Ring Road at Ekkaduthangal, Kasi theatre, Suburban Bus Terminal and GST Road-MNK Road Junction. Besides, a foot overbridge would be built at a cost of `39 crore linking the Park Town Suburban Railway Station, the Chennai Central Railway Station and the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.A flyover would be built at the junction of Koyambedu bus terminus entrance and Kaliyamman Temple Road at a cost of `40 crore, the Minister said. A new road would also be laid linking Puzhal and Amullaivayil Inner Ring Road on GST Road at a cost of `20 crore.New bridges will be built at eight places in Aminjikarai, Seemavaram, Kundrathur and Avadi at an expenditure of `30 crore, while a flyover would come up at Taramani Road-Tambaram-Velachery Road Junction near Vijayanagaram bus terminus at a cost of `50 crore.Another flyover would be constructed at a cost of `65 crore at the Kundrathur Road-Market Road Junction in Pallavaram on GST Road at a cost of `65 crore. Yet another flyover would come up at Perambur-Red Hills Road Junction near Rettai Yeri on the Inner Ring Road in Kolathur at an estimated cost of `50 crore, the Minister said.The first phase of Tambaram East Bypass Road for a stretch of four km would commence at a cost of `25 crore, Palanisamy said.
