CHENNAI: The very thought of a mortuary in any government-run hospital can be depressing – old air conditioners, dim lights, corpses badly embalmed and woefully weather-beaten old buildings have always been mainstays. But all this is set to change as the government allotted `10 crore for the improvement of post-mortem facilities, in the State Budget 2012-13.Pathologists and hospital administrators are a cheerful lot after the Finance Minister made the announcement. “For many years we have given up most pathological studies as the mortuaries have been neglected. Not only students, but even doctors try to avoid the place because of its bad condition,” explains a senior professor of medicine, who preferred anonymity. He added, “For the first time, the goverment has recognised that mortuaries need to be places where doctors can actually work and not just dump bodies.”“We welcome this move and thank the Chief Minister for finally fulfilling this requirement,” said Dr V Kanagasabai, Dean of the Madras Medical College.
