CHENNAI: Rotary International on Wednesday donated a Mallis Bipolar Cutting and Coagulation System to the Voluntary Health Services (VHS)-run Neuro Surgical Centre. The equipment was donated under the ‘Matching Grant’ scheme of Rotary International, jointly by The Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 3230, Rotary Club of Utara Subang Jaya, Malaysia, Rotary Club of Austin, USA, and Rotary Club of Madras East.Vasudevan, consultant neurosurgeon, explained how the equipment would be used in neuro surgeries and its edge over the prevailing technology. Dwelling at length, he said that Diathermy (electrically induced heat) had been in use in the field of neurosurgery for stopping blood flow. In monopolar diathermy, he said, the current  would pass between the instrument and the earth through the body. The earth would act as the ‘neutral’.“Whereas, in bipolar diathermy, the current would flow between the blades of the cautery forceps and would not hit the ground. Thereby, very minimal damage is caused to the nearby brain tissue,” he said. Mallis Bipolar Cautery, which employs advanced technology, ensures control of bleeding and helps the surgeon work with high precision on nerves, blood vessels and other critical soft tissues and even on the bone.It works even at low voltages and helps cut only the required tissue, thereby preventing damage to the brain. “It also prevents current from flowing around the area of surgery,” he said. According to him, the equipment would replace the cautery which had been put to use at VHS 25 years ago, Vasudevan said and added: “This is also the first of its kind in India and will help provide quality surgical care to needy patients.”The machine was donated to VHS by A Sampath Kumar, district governor, RI Dist 323o, and accepted by ES Krishnamoorthy, secretary, VHS. Earlier, NS Udayakumar, president, Rotary Club of Madras East, said that he was delighted to have the equipment donated to VHS, which had been serving the needy for more than six decades.
