Rohith Vemula is my icon, not Afzal Guru, says JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar
"We want freedom from poverty and corruption in India. Sedition should not be used to suppress the voice of students," said Kanhaiya.

New Delhi: Coming down heavily on NDA government for 'misusing' the sedition law, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar on Friday affirmed that Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was not his icon but it was Rohith Vemula, the Hyderabad Central University student who committed suicide alleging discrimination by the administration.

Addressing a press conference, Kanhaiya made it clear that he was not an "anti-national" as was being projected by a section of the media but a true son of the soil who believed in fighting for the jawans guarding India's borders as well as the poor farmers who toiled hard in their field to ensure food for all.

While talking about the controversial event on Afzal Guru in JNU campus, he said, "Afzal was an Indian as per the Constitution and whatever happened with him was under the Indian law. I will not like to comment on that. All I wanted to stress that Afzal Guru is no my icon but it is Rohith Vemula." "Tum kitne Rohith maroge, har ghar se Rohith niklega," he added.

Taking a dig at the some alleged doctored videos being used to target him, Kanhaiya said that he had full faith in the Constitution of India. Constitution is not a video that can be doctored," he said amidst applause from fellow students.

Kanhaiya's statement in a press conference came after two of the seven video clips of events at JNU between February 9 and 12 were reportedly found to be doctored by a Hyderabad based forensic science lab. The lab report said no 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogans were raised and words inciting violence were doctored.

While addressing a press conference at JNU Kanhaiya said, "The Britishers made sedition to suppress voice of justice seekers. We want freedom from poverty and corruption in India. Sedition should not be used to suppress the voice of students."

Rohith was a Hyderabad Central University scholar and he was expelled in August 2015 for allegedly attacking a student activist belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). On January 17, 2016 Rohith committed suicide by hanging himself.
