The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to take up works to cover manholes and recarpet damaged roads in the city. But officials said the works could be taken up only if there’s no forecast of rain for the next three days.
Most of the main roads are, according to them, “vulnerable” to heavy rain. The State capital has received about 325 mm of rainfall this season so far as against just 200 mm during the corresponding period last year. Of the 325 mm, about 225 mm was received in just three spells. The city was battered by heavy rain on July 20 and on that day alone, it received 170 mm rainfall.
One mini hot mix plant has been installed at the Chudi Bazar for filling up pot holes. Besides, five MRR units are also functional. The GHMC has proposed to spend `15 crore to identify and cover up potholes and undertake patch works including on roads maintained by the roads and buildings department and the national highways. Officials claimed that damaged roads would be recarpeted and after the monsoon, `60 crore would be set aside for their maintenance. Under the same plan, steps will be taken to interlock CC pavements at valley points and frequent flooding areas.
As per the proposals, 45 works are proposed to be taken up in south zone at `3.5 crore, 29 works in East Zone at `1.50 crore, 82 works in Central Zone at `6 crore and 180 works in the North Zone at `2.5 crore.
