CHENNAI: Relatives of a 25-year-old man blocked traffic on arterial Royapettah High Road for four hours, alleging that he died due to custodial torture. Samuraj (50), a resident of Ayanavaram, told reporters that his son Nityaraj, who was with the ‘Friends of Police’, was picked up by the ICF police on January 12 in connection with a theft of a cellphone from a duo. When he did not respond to their call to his cell phone the next day, they approached the Ayanavaram police, who directed them to their ICF counterparts, he said.He claimed that on Monday, they received a call that his son had been brought to the GH in Royapettah, where he was declared “dead on arrival.” He further claimed that they had no idea that Nithyaraj had been incarcerated at the Puzhal prison on January 14. Seeking action against Inspector Ramalingam, whom they claimed was responsible for his death, relatives blocked traffic on Royapettah High Road.
