BANGALORE: Prof S Sadagopan, Director, IIIT, Bangalore, has said that the level of engagement of the academic institutions with the students need to be reoriented and deepened to empower the students with the right measure of knowledge than fulfilling their responsibilities of teaching the courses. He was speaking at a seminar organised by Bangalore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCIC) titled ‘Samvriddi’ to evolve a strategy and identify gaps among three major stakeholders - government, industry and academia. He said the responsibilities of the institutions should rise above imparting lessons to improve value to the aptitude and knowledge of the students, he observed.Emphasising on the need for a rethink on the recruitment criterion adopted by companies for employability, Prof Sadagopan said, “It is not the question whether the employee is ready for the job but employer’s readiness. The question is, are you giving the recruits a challenging job,” he said. The seminar saw speakers from academia, industry, trainers and even students expressing perspectives on the need to strengthen the collaborative nature of the industry-academia. A clear strategy for the exercise between the industry and academic institutions which should also give importance to effective communication skills to prepare the recruits was proposed.
