Srinagar: Sporadic clashes were witnessed between locals and security forces in south Kashmir on the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday while restrictions were imposed in Anantnag town which is at the centre of the row surrounding the death of a trucker after being attacked in Udhampur.
A youth was injured during clashes in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said. The police said that the youth was hit by a tear smoke shell on head and was admitted to SKIMS Soura here for treatment. His condition is said to be "stable", the police said.
Zahid Rasool Bhat, a native of Anantnag town, was injured in a mob attack in Udhampur on October 9. He succumbed to his injuries at a Delhi hospital later. Groups of youth pelted stones at security forces at several places in Anantnag throughout the day even as authorities imposed strict restrictions in the main town to restore law and order.
Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protesting youth. Clashes were also witnessed near Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the news of fresh detention of JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik reached his Maisuma headquarters.
Malik, who was released after several hours of detention at Botengoo, the native place of Zahid, on Tuesday, was taken into custody by police when he was coming out of Soura hospital after medical checkup and visiting the injured Bijbehara youth, a JKLF spokesman said.
Protesting the detention of their leader, activists of JKLF took to streets at Maisuma and adjoining localities and clashed with security forces, resulting in disruption in normal activities in the area including Lal Chowk.
