Srinagar: Several areas in Srinagar on Monday observed a shutdown to protest the death of a 16-year-old boy in clashes with the police, even as authorities suspended an assistance sub-inspector for acting in a "negligent and careless" manner.
Shops in many areas remained closed and residents took to streets to protest the killing of Wamik Farooq. They pelted stones at policemen deployed in the area where tension was palpable after Sunday's skirmishes.
The old city has been witnessing violent clashes between the youth and police especially on Fridays and Sundays for the past two years.
The police, meanwhile, placed under suspension the assistant sub-inspector who lobbed a tear gas shell which had hit the boy on his head. The boy had later succumbed to injury in hospital.
An inquiry has been ordered into the incident and further action is being initiated, a police spokesman said.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the old city as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, who planned to attend the funeral of the boy, has been placed under house arrest as a precautionary measure, official
sources said.
