The residents near the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Choozhambala on the Vayalikkada - Mukkola stretch are wondering whether to cry or laugh. After years of neglect, when the Works Department tarred their road and constructed a drain, it was the beginning of a new headache for them.
The drain, which stops abruptly where a transformer stands on its course, has worsened the waterlogging in the low-lying area, say the residents. The road, which has now been developed as a major byroad connecting the city and Maruthoor on the MC Road, is used by thousands, including students of St Thomas School.
‘’We were already facing waterlogging during rains and the drain, which now functions as a ‘tank’, has worsened the situation,’’ said Gireesh, a resident of the area. Ironically, the works were stopped around 15 m before the end point where the drain had to be connected with a canal.
The Works Department, however, had a callous reply for the plight of the residents. ‘’The authorities told us that they had written to the KSEB to shift the transformer. But they couldn’t tell us whether it would happen in the near future,’’ said Gireesh.
The residents also complain that the blocked drain water is seeping into the water supply pipes during rains. ‘’It’s good that the monsoon didn’t hit hard this time. Or else, it would have given us a hard time,’’ said Saraswathy Amma, another resident.
