Remembering 'Sholay' I
Remembering 'Sholay' I
Viju Khote, who played Kaalia, one of the lackeys of Gabbar Singh, has some vivid memories associated with the film

Paresh Rawaal goes to a film set with Ajay Devgn in Athiti Tum Kab Jaoge and spots Kalia from Sholay.

Life has been no different for Khote, who is more remembered as Kaalia than his original name. He says, “After the film was released, I was walking with my son on the road and all of a sudden a man shouted 'woh dekh Kaalia...'My son was three then and he got very upset that they called me Kaalia. I told him let them say whatever they want to say. That’s when I realized the success of my character.”

Viju Khote was not a known face back in the 70’s and he is still not sure if Amjad Khan had recommended his name to Ramesh Sippy. “I got a call from Ramesh Sippy’s office so I went to meet him. As I was entering, I saw Amjad Khan walking out. He winked at me and said Acha role hain, haan bol dena.”

Not many are aware that Viju and Amjad were a part of the same theatre group and have done plays together.

Viju had few scenes with a horse but have had a tough time shooting those scenes. “The horse was a former race horse so she was very impulsive. She dropped me at least 6-7 times because she used to get wild at the slightest of sound on the set,” says Viju.

“The film was shot on 35mm and 70 mm camera and so every scene was shot twice from different lenses. Also, my screen space in the film is close to 7 minutes” he adds.

The lead actors and character actors do not mingle with each other not for the fact that they don’t have many scenes together, but they are also put up in different hotels. “The lead actors were staying in Holiday Inn and we (Viju, Mac Mohan and Amjad)were put up in Hotel Bangalore International. Our pick up cars and theirs were different. The four main characters (Amitabh, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar) travelled with Ramesh Sippy to the set from the hotel.”
