Reconsider move on Investment Zone project

Former Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran demanded that the government reconsider its decision to set up the National Investment and manufacturing Zone project in the state. The move is being implemented without any discussion, he said.

In a statement here, he said that the  State Government decided to implement the project at a time when the Union   Environment Ministry and Labour Ministry were yet to come out with a notification in this regard.

He asked UDF convenor P P Thankachan, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and INTUC state president R Chandrasekharan to clarify their stand on implementing the project in the state.

Premachandran said that neither environmental norms nor labour laws were applicable for this project. The need for conducting separate ecological impact assessment studies when starting new ventures was also not needed. This could only have adverse impact on the environment, he said.

Moreover, labour laws would also be bypassed in the new project. There will be no job security, women should work in three shifts and no trade union rights in the ventures coming under the new National Investment and manufacture Zone project, he said.

Despite this, the State Government had sought the Centre’s approval for Kochi-Palakkad National Investment and Manufacturing Zone.  ‘’The government is going ahead with implementing the project without proper  discussion. The government should reconsider its decision on the project,’’ he said.
