Tata Group Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata on Wednesday visited the manufacturing facility of famous 'Jaipur Foot' -- an artificial leg - in Jaipur at the world's largest organisation for handicapped Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS).
Tata after inspecting the manufacturing base said the success story of the Jaipur Foot was because of its simple and low cost technology that enables the organisation to disburse the artificial limb free to the poor, a BMVSS release said. He was informed by the BMVSS founder DR Mehta that more than 1.40 million persons around the world have become the beneficiary of the prosthetic which is not only low cast but durable as well.
Tata's Sir Dorabji Tata Trust is funding the BMVSS in providing artificial limbs and also tricycles for the handicapped persons. Mehta also informed him that a 25-member team of the organisation would be going to Afghanistan on June 6 for holding a month-long free fitment camp at kabul.
This camp is being organised with the asociation of the Afghanistan government in which 1,000 Afghan amputees would be provided free artificial limbs.
