CHENNAI: The shopping scramble in T Nagar on Friday showed no reminisce of the 70-day lull that prevailed in the area till last week, after 26 shops that had been sealed so long for building violations opened.Ringing in the festive spirit, Ranganathan Street in particular, was jam-packed on Friday. Several women shoppers thronged garment stores in Ranganathan Street, just two days ahead of the fest. “We chose today to shop here as we thought the shops would offer maximum discount only closest to Pongal,” said Durga of Red Hills, who was accompanied by two of her neighbours.Their observations proved true. Be it the latest lot of 7am Arivu sarees, named after the film, or pavement shops that sell two T-shirts for Rs 100, one salwar-kameez for Rs 100, and a two-piece clothing set for Rs 60, shops offered special discounts.Saravanan, a driver, said he was due to visit his hometown Dindigul on Friday night, and could obtain permission only on Friday for shopping. “Prices of all types of clothing have gone up by at least 10 per cent this year. But, this is still a lot lesser than what the malls offer,” said Jayachithra, a BPO staffer.
