TIRUCHY: Tension gripped the city on Thursday following the alleged murder of former minister K N Nehru’s brother Ramajayam.Bus services came to a halt on the arterial routes and almost all shops in the city downed shutters as news about the incident spread. Bus services were also diverted from Thillai Nagar, where Ramajayam’s residence and the DMK party office are located. Soon after, DMK workers holding black flags marched to the General Hospital, where Ramajayam’s body was taken and raised slogans against the State government. They then pelted stones on the mortuary, damaging the glass windows and boards. When the body was taken to the mortuary, angry DMK cadre chased away the police personnel who were posted on security duty. Sensing the mood of the irate mob, most of the journalists who arrived at the spot stayed at a safe distance.However, two photojournalists, who were apparently unaware of the tense situation, went inside and were attacked by the DMK men when they tried to take pictures. A section of the party workers then started shouting slogans against the police and damaged the barricades kept in the area.To avert untoward incidents, hundreds of policemen were deployed on the hospital premises.
