The Bengal CM said that his Ram remarks were distorted by the media.

New Delhi: After the furore caused by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s alleged remarks that Lord Ram is fictitious, he has now said that the media had distorted his remarks, and insisted that he had not questioned the god’s existence.

“I had quoted from Tagore,” the Chief Minister claimed.

“Tagore had said, and I quote, ‘The poet’s mind is the birthplace of Ram, which is more real than Ayodhya,’” he said, on Saturday.

Bhattacharjee said he had quoted from Rabindranath Tagore’s Bhasha O Chhanda.

The Chief Minister had made the remarks on Thursday, while addressing a meeting to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

His clarification came just before the Vishwa Hindu Parishad held a massive 'Save Ram Setu rally' in Kolkata. A large number of VHP supporters converged in central Kolkata to touch a stone – considered sacred – which came from the Ram Setu.

In light of the recent riots over Tasleema Nasreen, the administration was worried about such a rally by a conservative religious group.
