HOSUR: The weather gods may have been kind enough to bless the people of the district with a good spell, but not the civic body officials. Heavy rains since Wednesday night have only made things worse as the local administration officials of Hosur, Krishnagiri and Bargur have failed to take steps to tackle the monsoon.Flood water has inundated several low-lying areas here, particularly Bargur region. As per data available with the rain gauge stations at 8 am on Thursday, the district received a total rainfall of 1,006 mm, with an average rainfall of 84 mm. The hilly region of Thally and Pochampalli, the coconut belt, witnessed the highest rainfall of 150 mm each, followed by Uthangarai, which received 128 mm. In Bargur, water inundated the areas around the government hospital, textile market and the government school.Based on instructions from Collector C N Maheswaran, revenue department officials, led by DRO C Prakasam, swung into action and cleared water stagnated using poclaine machines. Residents of low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer places. Meanwhile, the water in Penneswara Madam lake near Kaveripattinam rose to the maximum level and started overflowing.The public fear that the tank bed might breach anytime as the Public Works Department (PWD) has not maintained the lake properly in recent years. Based on instructions from the district administration, both PWD and revenue department officials have started making arrangements to strengthen the tank bed.Same is the case with Hosur town, where garbage remains uncleared in many places, particularly in Ganesh JMC Gardens near Komberigutta and Jaishankar Colony. Overall, the entire district received good rains. Benugondapuram witnessed 107 mm rainfall, while Nedungal received 80 mm followed by Krishnagiri, which recorded 70 mm. Denkanikotta recorded 62 mm, while Hosur witnessed 59 mm followed by Anchetty with 55 mm, Soolagiri 27 mm and Royakotta 17 mm.Meanwhile, several low-lying areas in Erode were also inundated.Some huts erected on the banks of Perumpallam Odai submerged due to heavy flow in the canal. The town received nearly 110 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Other parts in the district also received heavy to scattered rainfall. Banana plantations were damaged in Nambiyur, Kurumandur, Ayipalayam and Karapadi.
